"Lab Philosophy"
Biomedical Polymer Engineering Laboratory (BPEL)
The Biomedical Polymer Engineering Laboratory is founded on the belief that impactful research emerges from a culture of curiosity, rigor, collaboration, integrity, and mutual respect. Our mission is to advance biomaterials and medical device technologies that improve human health while training the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.
1. Scientific Excellence Through Rigor — Scientific breakthroughs are rarely achieved alone. Although each member leads their own research project, we function as a collaborative team that supports one another's success. We encourage open communication, knowledge sharing, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. Every lab member contributes to the collective growth of the laboratory and helps create an environment where everyone can learn, contribute, and thrive.
2. Collaboration and Team Science — Scientific breakthroughs are rarely achieved alone.
3. Continuous Learning and Mentorship — Learning never stops in science. We foster a culture where students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty learn from one another through mentorship, teaching, and constructive feedback. Senior members are expected to support and guide newer members, while all lab members are encouraged to seek new skills, embrace challenges, and remain intellectually curious.
4. Hard Work, Ownership, and Growth — Meaningful research requires dedication, perseverance, and accountability. We strive to work efficiently, think independently, and take ownership of our projects. Challenges, setbacks, and failed experiments are part of the scientific journey and provide valuable opportunities for growth. We celebrate progress, resilience, and continuous improvement rather than perfection.
5. Innovation with Impact — Our research aims to bridge fundamental science and real-world applications. We encourage creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking while maintaining scientific rigor. Whether developing new biomaterials, medical devices, or translational technologies, we strive to create solutions that address important clinical and societal challenges.
6. Respect, Inclusion, and Professionalism — We are committed to maintaining a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment. Discrimination, harassment, bullying, or unprofessional behavior are not tolerated. We value diverse perspectives and backgrounds and believe that inclusion strengthens our science, creativity, and collective success.
7. Responsibility and Stewardship — Laboratory resources, equipment, and shared spaces are collective assets. Every member is responsible for maintaining a safe, organized, and productive research environment. We strive to leave our laboratory, our collaborations, and our scientific community better than we found them.
"Our Shared Goal"
We seek not only to produce high-quality research, but also to develop scientists, engineers, and leaders who are technically excellent, ethically grounded, collaborative, and committed to improving society through innovation and discovery.
