Background

Dr. JohnEric Smith is an Associate Professor and Department Head in the Department of Kinesiology at Mississippi State University with interests in carbohydrate metabolism, thermoregulation, and training for performance enhancement. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees at Auburn University focusing on thermoregulation and athletic performance.

Prior to his arrival at Mississippi State University, he spent 9 years working at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) with a focus in carbohydrate metabolism and performance. While at GSSI, he contributed to the development and scientific support of a number of commercially available products. He also successfully led the first GSSI Satellite Lab, based at IMG Academy.

In his current and previous roles, Dr. Smith has worked with numerous professional and Olympic athletes including those in the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), U.S. Swimming, U.S. Soccer, Professional Golf Association (PGA), cycling, triathlon, ultra-running, and many others. Dr. Smith actively contributes to the scientific field through research publications and presentations while also contributing to sports and exercise through assisting with the application of science with multiple elite and professional sports.
